The Australian Labor Party (ALP) was founded as a democratic socialist political party prior to the first sitting of the Australian Federal Parliament in 1901. It is descended from parties founded in the various Australian colonies by the emerging labour movement in the 1890s.
The ALP is positioned at the centre left of the political spectrum.
