Summary
The Tasmanian Wilderness Society was established in 1976 from the members of an existing Tasmanian conservation group, the Southwest Action Committee. The Society had established interstate branches within a short time, and was nation-wide by 1980.
In 1984, the organisation changed its name to The Wilderness Society to reflect a more national scope. The Wilderness Society went on to encompass a number of separately incorporated organisations, with Campaign Centres located in most Australian capital cities, as well as a number of regional centres.
