Event: Bicentenary of Australia (1988)

The bicentenary of Australia marked 200 years of European settlement.

The Australian Bicentennial Authority (ABA) was set up to plan, fund and coordinate projects that emphasized the nation's cultural heritage. State Councils were also created to ensure cooperation between the federal and state governments. The result was a national programme of events and celebrations to commemorate the Bicentenary.

During 1988, various Indigenous people of Australia made a concerted effort to promote an awareness among other Australians of their presence, their needs, and their desire that there should be communication, reconciliation and cooperation over the matter of prior settlement and land rights. To this purpose, they set up a highly visible Tent Embassy at a shoreside location adjacent to the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens.
