Summary

Cheryl Kernot served in the Australian federal parliament as a Senator for Queensland (1993-1997) and was leader of the Australian Democrats between April 1993 and October 1997. On 15 October 1997 she unexpectedly resigned from the Senate, the party leadership, and the Australian Democrats; defecting to the Australian Labor Party.

Kernot went on to represent Labor at the 1998 election, winning the seat of Dickson by a narrow margin, and serving in the Labor shadow ministry during her term in office. Labor subsequently lost the seat at the 2001 election and Kernot announced her retirement from politics.

After spending several years away from politics, in 2010 Kernot ran unsuccessfully as an independent for the New South Wales Senate.
