Summary

John Coulter served in the Australian federal parliament as a Senator for South Australia (1987-1995) and was leader of the Australian Democrats for a period between 1991 and 1993.

On 7 November 2001, three days before a federal election, Coulter publicly resigned from the Australian Democrats, claiming that the party had shifted too far from its core principles of democratic grassroots and become too pragmatic.
